The Elizabeth Line: Fastest & Cheapest Overall
If you're travelling alone with manageable luggage, the Elizabeth line is the undisputed best option. It runs direct from all Heathrow terminals to Paddington in around 25 minutes (45 min to Liverpool Street), costs just Β£10β13 on Oyster or contactless, and runs every 10 minutes throughout the day.
The only downsides: there are escalators and stairs, and no help for oversized luggage. For solo travellers with a carry-on, it's a no-brainer. For families or those with multiple large cases, a ride-hail app is much more practical.
Bolt: Cheapest Door-to-Door Option
Among ride-hailing apps, Bolt consistently offers the lowest fares from Heathrow to central London. Expect to pay around Β£40β55 for a standard ride to Westminster, Kensington, or the City β roughly 10β20% less than Uber for the same route.
Bolt picks up from the designated rideshare zones at each terminal. Availability is generally good, though wait times can reach 10β15 minutes during early morning peaks (6β9am) and bank holidays.
Uber: Reliable but Pricier
Uber is available at Heathrow and offers a broadly similar service to Bolt β but at a higher price point. On the HeathrowβWestminster route, Uber typically runs Β£50β70. During surge pricing (delayed flights, school holidays, bad weather), Uber can reach Β£90β110. If Uber is surging, Bolt is often the best fallback.
Black Cab: Premium, Predictable
London black cabs are metered, regulated, and never surge. The fare from Heathrow to central London (zone 1) typically runs Β£55β85 depending on traffic and exact destination. You can hail one at the taxi rank outside each terminal, or book in advance via FreeNow.
The premium is real β but so is the reliability. Black cab drivers hold the Knowledge (the most demanding route-learning test in the world) and will get you there even without mobile signal.
